Performant edge compute with predictable pricing in targeted locations
When SamKnows—a UK-based platform that measures internet quality of experience—needed higher bandwidth and reliability for a prominent US customer, they turned to StackPath Edge Compute for performant processing with predictable pricing, in targeted physical locations.
Headquartered in London, SamKnows measures, analyses, and visualizes internet quality of experience in real-time. Governments, ISPs, application providers, and consumers worldwide trust the company to monitor internet performance at the country, network, home, and even device level. SamKnows spots faults as they occur and delivers actionable insights and notifications that are easy to understand and genuinely improve the quality of experience.
SamKnows’ services utilize test servers: these servers communicate with agents/clients running on devices within a specific target region and analyze the traffic patterns and performance to evaluate the internet quality of experience between the test server and the target region.
Significant test server bandwidth and reliability issues complicated SamKnows’ monitoring for a prominent US customer; they quickly needed to find a replacement or supplementary hosting provider. They required the ability to deploy highly reliable test servers close to the customers’ operations in approximately ten US cities—the test servers themselves could not be a source of poor internet quality of experience. Additionally, the servers needed to support:
- network speeds greater than 10 Gbps
- native C/++ code
- communications via arbitrary Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP)
SamKnows reviewed solutions from hyperscale cloud computing providers, such as Amazon Web Services and Google Cloud Platform, as well as edge computing options from legacy content delivery network (CDN) providers, including Cloudflare and Fastly. They even considered co-locating and managing physical servers on their own.
Ultimately, they selected StackPath because it uniquely provided the best of both categories and more. StackPath offered real Linux virtual machines (VMs) and containers, with 100 Gbps speeds, deployed in with the geographic diversity more often associated with a CDN. Additionally, SamKnows valued that StackPath charged for a bandwidth a fraction of what regular cloud providers charge, that it comes fully equipped with an enterprise-grade CDN, and went the extra mile by helping verify connectivity to each of the major ISPs.
With StackPath Edge Compute, SamKnows was able to deploy their existing applications with no changes or restrictions, right at the edge of the internet, immediately resolving its bandwidth and reliability issues. The company enjoys the predictability and efficiency of consumption-based billing, able to scale computing and bandwidth as needed without the cost of installing and maintaining physical servers or high monthly cloud fees.
Further, SamKnows now relies on StackPath as a trusted partner for its continued global expansion and growth. When SamKnows gains a contract in a new StackPath country or region, it knows that it will get the performance and value StackPath provides worldwide. SamKnows offers now uses StackPath Edge Compute in Australia, Hong Kong, and Europe to deliver its services, tripling its StackPath use in just three years since they signed up.
StackPath took the time to really understand our use case and put us in touch with their technical leadership. Getting up and running with the first installation really was just a couple of hours. We had moved our full production load there within about two weeks. This was after a short and successful bake-off against two other competitors.”
