Origin Shield is a mid-tier caching layer. Its globally placed PoPs sit between the SecureCDN (Secure Content Delivery Network) and your origin to protect you from request overload.

Overload Protection

When you reset your cache or publish new content, a typical CDN would send requests to your origin from every location. This can quickly overload it. Origin Shield stops this.

Efficient Origin Requests

Once enabled, multiple edge requests for uncached content are sent to Origin Shield. It then filters these multiple requests into a single origin request.

Better Purging & Provisioning

Whether you provision fresh content regularly or have large files that require the occasional cache purge, Origin Shield handles request spikes gracefully.

Global, Optimized, Automatic.

Global Protection & Speed

For optimal performance, Origin Shield PoPs are located across multiple regions and connected via secure data centers. This allows us to take the most direct path to your origin, giving Origin Shield the ability to optimize bandwidth usage and the user experience.

Optimized Connections

Origin Shield maintains a constant connection with your origin using big keep-alive timeouts. This eliminates the overhead of TCP handshakes and new HTTP connections. Connection collapsing is also used to merge multiple requests for the same URI into one request.

Automatic Failover

Each Origin Shield location is equipped with load balancers that provide equal load and failover ability. All edge servers are configured to use one location as the primary, but still have the others as backup. If there are network connectivity issues, edge servers can re-route to another shield location.
