Apple and Dell are the newest kids on the block of corporations and startups in the edge infrastructure market to enable faster content delivery and low-latency cloud compute. And, as the edge infrastructure market accelerates, so too are open source projects that make edge infrastructure more manageable.
In this eighth issue of High Performance Infrastructure, you’ll learn more about Apple’s and Dell’s new edge offerings and find a list of the most recently-updated repos on GitHub related to edge infrastructure and edge computing.
Featured Stories
Apple launching edge caching service (Apple Insider)
Apple wants to utilize existing ISP networks and servers to house data closer to its customers with a new service called Apple Edge Cache.
- With this service, content is pre-cached on a server inside an ISP’s network or cached as content is viewed by a customer (for use by future customers).
- This practice of keeping data in a server local to the user for reuse throughout the provider’s service area is called edge caching.
- Other companies like Netflix and Amazon already have a similar caching system for content delivery.
- If your application has a minimum of 25Gbps during peak usage, you can apply for an invitation to Apple Edge Cache here.
Dell introduces new edge computing products (Data Center Knowledge)
Dell is breaking into the edge computing space with new software, servers, and micro data centers.
- New hardware and software makes it easier for businesses to build data centers in cramped, remote, and rugged locations for edge computing.
- Releases from Dell include a new micro data center that’s about the size of a refrigerator and a new small-footprint server.
- There’s also a new streaming analytics engine and an updated tool for secure, remote management.
- Traditional hardware makers like Dell and startups like Vapor IO have planted a stake in the emerging edge market.
Manage edge infrastructure with code (StackPath)
You can now provision and manage containers from StackPath at the network edge using infrastructure as code.
- Terraform allows developers to build, configure, and update infrastructure safely and efficiently with code.
- StackPath has released a new Terraform plugin for edge compute containers.
- Terraform makes it easy to augment traditional cloud compute infrastructure with low-latency edge compute infrastructure.
- If you’re using Microsoft Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud, you can easily augment your existing cloud setup with StackPath to improve your hybrid infrastructure.
